Still, because Spalding was not on a psychiatric hold, she was not formally considered a missing person by deputies at the hospital, who were on the lookout and said that if they saw her they'd bring her back. "The communications center staff responded, 'We'll look into it,' " the findings state. "There is no indication that anyone was dispatched to the exterior stairwell." Spalding's body was found there four days later.
The provincial hospital has been operating on a provisional license that would expire in December unless it shows the government that it can function as a tertiary hospital in a new facility, Baguilat said. The investigation should be completed within a month to give the government time to enforce remedies or employ alternative solutions before the hospital loses its license, he said. COYNE Associated Press An Ohio man who said he fatally shot his hospitalized wife out of love because of her debilitated condition that left her unable to speak, was convicted by a jury on Friday and could face life in prison. Police say John Wise, 68, calmly walked into Barbara Wise's hospital room on Aug. 4, 2012, and shot her at her bedside. She died the next day. Barbara Wise, 65, was in the intensive care unit at Akron General Medical Center after suffering triple cerebral aneurysms that had left her unable to speak, a family friend has said. Wise testified that he couldn't stand to see his wife of 45 years in pain in the hospital. "She opened her eyes and looked at me like she was in pain and a tear rolled down her cheek," Wise told the jury this week. "I decided then what I was going to do." Hours later he returned to the hospital with a gun. "My recollection is that I walked in there, and within two minutes, I kissed her on the cheek and shot her," he said.
The transfers came Wednesday, he said, the same day that Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi revealed breakdowns in the department's response to the disappearance of 57-year-old Lynne Spalding. Seven deputies and institutional officers have also been transferred into the hospital's security detail, Nicco says. Spalding was found Oct. 8 by a building engineer, 17 days after she was first reported missing from her hospital room, where she was being treated for a bladder infection. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the reassigned dispatcher had promised, "We'll take care of it" -- but apparently did nothing -- when a hospital staffer called Oct. 4 to report seeing someone in the stairwell. Her father was a World War II veteran; she had two uncles on her mother's side in the military and grandparents on both sides of her family proudly wore the uniform to represent the red, white and blue. Even Maloof's mother, who still lives in town, played an important role on the home front during WWII. "My mother worked in the factories that were converted to manufacture parts for munitions and other war necessities. Specifically she talks about working on putting together the cones for missiles, other munitions and vehicles." She did not set out to join the military at first, but did follow in her mother's footsteps. "I always knew I wanted to be a nurse because my mother was a nurse," the younger Bertha Maloof, called Bea, said. "My mother studied and had early training, but never really had a job as a nurse because she got married and had a family." Maloof joined the army in February, 1983 at the rank of Private and began basic training at Fort Dix in New Jersey. Mrs Harry was found guilty of misconduct but allegations that she bullied colleagues were not proved. A Nursing and Midwifery Council panel found she was still fit to practice but gave her a five-year caution order. The panel heard that during some night shifts, a single nurse was looking after 17 patients on a ward. It said Mrs Harry should have been focused on staffing levels but she was distracted by "training, targets and other matters". 'Risk of harm' In making its decision the panel told her: "You had effectively closed your mind to your direct operational responsibilities and had limited yourself to the strategic role. "You had the professional responsibility for every nurse in the Trust....you had in the past placed patients at risk of harm." The panel also reprimanded Mrs Harry for using inappropriate language towards a colleague, after she told her she was a "waste of space". She was cleared of charges relating to cleanliness and hygiene, inappropriate handling of incident forms, telling staff off, reducing a colleague to tears and disregarding staff concerns. Mrs Harry was employed by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and its predecessor, Mid Staffordshire General Hospitals NHS Trust, from 1998 to 2006. The Patient Protection Act is doomed, despite the nurses strong showing out of the gate in February, when they convinced a nine-member majority to introduce the proposal imposing strict nurse-to-patient ratios on District hospitals and penalties for noncompliance. First of all, Health Committee Chair Yvette Alexander, D-Ward 7, has near absolute control over the bills fate. Even though she was among the co-introducers, shes been dragged kicking and screaming this far. Numerous council colleagues (and the hospital industry) are counting on her to stuff the bill in her pocket and forget about it; appetites are thin for another big labor-backed bill this close to an election year after Mayor Vincent Gray 's veto of the Large Retailer Accountability Act and subsequent council affirmation . Alexander has said more than once it may not ever proceed beyond Fridays hearing. She cites concerns raised by hospital administrators since she co-introduced the bill, implying that even conducting the hearing at all should be seen as a concession. You can look at it at another way. I didnt have to have a hearing at all, she told me. But for the sake of argument, lets say Alexander does eventually move it. The only committee member I'm able to identify as leaning the nurses' way is Councilwoman Anita Bonds, D-At large. And she, like most, won't commit either way.

The incident took place at Abington Manor, a 120-bed Genesis HealthCare facility in the town of Clarks Summit. Aimee Larkin, a 42-year-old licensed practical nurse who had worked at Abington Manor since 2011, is believed to have killed 79-year-old resident Howard Kinney, according to local reports. The shooting took place at about 5:30 p.m. Monday while Larkin was working a shift, police say. They identified the weapon as a semiautomatic gun, and said that Larkin apparently shot Kinney in the chest and then shot herself in the head. No suicide note was found and investigators did not immediately have an idea about Larkin's motives, South Abington Township Police Chief Robert Gerrity told reporters. Larkin's coworkers said they did not have reason to believe Larkin was disgruntled or that she and Kinney had a contentious relationship, according to the Scranton Times Tribune . The incident was shocking and isolated, Abington Manor spokeswoman Jeanne Moore said in an emailed statement. She noted that this is the first incidence of violence since the facility opened 28 years ago. Sutter Health, which runs 24 acute-care hospitals in Northern California, said it reached the settlement Monday just prior to a trial starting this month over the allegations that it added thousands of dollars for "Code 37x" anesthesia charges that were already covered by other billing for the hospital operating room. Nationwide, federal officials and consumer advocates have been putting pressure on hospitals to explain their high prices, while many employers have been demanding greater price transparency in an attempt to hold down costs. Also Anthem Blue Cross is sued over policy cancellations The accord resolves a 2009 whistle-blower complaint against the Sacramento hospital company from a billing auditor, Rockville Recovery Associates. The California Department of Insurance joined the suit in 2011. The state's insurance commissioner, Dave Jones, hailed the settlement as a major victory for consumers who often face large medical bills that are difficult to decipher. As part of the agreement, Sutter agreed to disclose its actual costs and prices for each part of its anesthesia billing. The nonprofit health system also agreed to permit insurers to more readily contest its bills and to charge for anesthesia on a flat-fee basis going forward. "This settlement represents a groundbreaking step in opening up hospital billing to public scrutiny," Jones said. "This new transparency should lead to lower prices and point the way to similar billing reforms for all types of hospital services." Sutter didn't admit to any wrongdoing as part of the settlement, and spokesman Bill Gleeson said it opted for the agreement to avoid spending significant resources contesting the allegations at trial.

CMC officials estimated that they are already serving more than 50 percent of the patients in the Fort Mill-Tega Cay area. It is an area rich with a high percentage of insurance-carrying patients. Quality of health care was also debated. Doctors testifying for Piedmont said the loss of patients could affect their medical skills because of their need to have a certain number of cases to maintain their proficiency, especially in the more complicated specialties. During DHECs review of applications, Piedmont officials said a continued loss of patients and revenues to Carolinas HealthCare hospitals in Pineville, N.C., and/or Fort Mill could force PMC to close its neonatal, infusion and wound care centers, as well as make cuts in the emergency department. PMC, however, is expanding it emergency department. The emergency department is the largest source of hospital admissions. The emergency department expansion is part of Piedmonts strategy to compete with Carolinas HealthCare in York County.

Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office said the case has developed into a homicide investigation after the body of the mother of three was found in a remote sugar cane field Wednesday. Police say there had been a violent confrontation at Lindseys home before her body was removed and dumped 85 miles away. Lindsey, 49, was last seen Sunday and gave no indication that anything was wrong in a text message to her daughter that night. She had recently returned home from a trip out of town. She was reported missing Monday after failing to show for work at Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach. Authorities arrived at her home and found her vehicle as well as other personal items in the home. It breaks our hearts to have to write this, but our mom has passed away, Lindseys daughters posted on a Facebook page dedicated to finding her. There are no words to describe how we feel. 1 in special issue of Pediatrics devoted to home visiting, looks at Durham Connects, a program that provides home visits for newborns and their parents in Durham, N.C. Authors Dodge and Benjamin Goodman, a Duke research scientist, found that participating families visited the emergency room less often than control group families and had fewer overnight hospital stays. The results held true a year after birth, well after the nurse's contact with the family had ended. The findings have significant cost implications because the price of hospital emergency room visits and overnight stays often ranges into the thousands of dollars. By contrast, the Durham Connects program costs an average of $700 per family. The Affordable Care Act includes funding for home visiting programs. In September, the federal Department of Health and Human Services announced $69.7 million in grants to expand home visiting services in 13 states. But home visiting encompasses a wide array of approaches. Many programs are intensive, multiyear efforts targeted to poor families that can cost $4,000 per family or more. By contrast, Durham Connects costs less because it is relatively brief and makes extensive use of referrals. The program was developed by Duke University in partnership with the Durham County Health Department and the Center for Child and Family Health.

Born in Reading, she graduated from Muhlenberg High School in Laureldale, Berks County, and earned her registered nurse's diploma at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1975. While working as a nurse at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, she earned her master's degree in nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, a daughter, Jennifer, said. Through most of her career, her daughter said, Mrs. Napieralski "worked as a nurse full time and taught part time." After working as a nurse at Jefferson, Hahnemann, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, she began a 20-year nursing career at what is now Virtua Voorhees medical center in 1985, working in the intensive-care and cardiac units. She taught nursing at Burlington County College, Gloucester County College, and Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, her daughter said. In 2009, she earned a post-master's certificate in nursing at Villanova University. Besides her daughter, she is survived by her mother, Dorothy; another daughter, Lisa Corritore; a grandson; and her former husband, Thomas.

A California nurse has claimed in court that after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and required time off and chemotherapy treatment, her employer, Kaiser Hospital, demoted her, forced her to work through lunch hours to make up for time spent at chemo sessions and assigned her to work in the flu division despite doctors warning her that exposure to flu infection could kill her, Courthouse News reported . Petra Albert from Los Angeles, CA, has filed a disability discrimination lawsuit against Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and affiliates for the merciless abuse and mistreatment she suffered at the hands of her employer whilst working as a nurse. The claim states: "Before her return, Ms. Albert's doctors warned her that chemotherapy could seriously weaken her immune system and exposure to infections such as the flu could be disastrous or even fatal. Kaiser, however, did not attempt to accommodate Ms. Albert but rather put her in charge of the flu program, putting her health at serious risk. Albert, who has 25 years experience working in the nursing field was hired by Kaiser in 2009 as a nurse educator, was promoted within a year for successful performance. However, she was soon diagnosed with breast cancer and required a double mastectomy in 2010. Albert alleges that after she returned to work following her reconstructive surgery she received no accommodation, but instead was met with insults, hostility and callous comments about her cancer and forced to return to working 60 hours a week within the same month as surgery. Moreover, she claims that her supervisor threatened her that if she didnt quit her job and continued to work for Kaiser, Ms. Albert would hate her life. In October 2011 after her white blood cells dropped considerably, the nurse took another leave of absence involving more chemotherapy. This time when she returned to work, she was called to a meeting where she was ridiculed before being forcibly banished to another hospital location. Kaiser subsequently refused any further requests for time-off for chemotherapy and fired her.

To gauge the program's effects, the Duke research team designed a study that divided into two groups all of the 4,777 babies born in Durham County between July 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2010. Those born on even dates were offered the program, while those born on odd dates were not. The authors then analyzed medical records for a random subsample of those families. In addition to an overall reduction in emergency care episodes, the authors found that all the subgroups studied saw a decrease in use of emergency care. While some groups benefited more than others, the pattern held true for both single- and two-parent families, for families receiving Medicaid and for privately insured families. "High-risk families were not the only ones who benefited," Goodman said.

And then I got interested into wholistic health counseling which is a matter of you know, teaching people to eat a lot of vegetables and have a good healthy diet and exercise and to do things for their stress. But that, I never made a lot of money with and I decided I would do something different. But I have had a lot of Anatomy and Physiology with that and I decided I'd try medical coding. Haig Harris, a lawyer representing the children of Lynne Spalding, 57, said he was told that the hospital employee saw a woman lying in the exterior stairwell and reported it to a nurse. The nurse notified the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, which handles security for the city-owned hospital and previously had searched the grounds for Spalding. But days passed before another hospital employee noticed the woman and got the attention of authorities, Harris said. Even if the hospital employee who stepped over Spalding mistook her for a sleeping homeless person, someone should have checked to make sure she was OK, Harris said. He questioned why hospital employees didn't suspect a woman on a fifth floor stairwell might be a patient and whether the Sheriff's Department even investigated the nurse's report. A sheriff's spokeswoman said she could not comment until a probe is completed, and that she did not know when that would be. "This is a hospital," Harris said. "Why didn't somebody put their hand on the body to see if there was a pulse?" The San Francisco Chronicle, citing unidentified sources, first disclosed the incident. The newspaper's account said an "orderly" had twice stepped over a woman lying in the spot where Spalding was later discovered.
He is most known for his landscapes of the area. The Indiana State Museum has a large collection of his paintings, most of which are much smaller than the season scenes he did for the hospital, museum fine arts curator Mark Ruschman said. The Indiana State Museum agreed to lend its "Winter" scene, which is in storage, to the hospital because of the value of having all four paintings together, Ruschman said. "It's for the community good," he said. "The murals were painted specifically for the hospital, and we find value in reuniting them." The paintings are planned to hang as they did when they were first installed in 1914. The winter and autumn scenes will be hung on one side of the hallway, and the summer and spring paintings on the other, McGovern said. Natural light and high traffic are dangerous for older paintings, so the Steele works will hang in a hallway that leads to a conference room. There, they won't be exposed to too much sunlight, and they'll be in a quiet area that's still free for the public to view, Kaufman said. The hospital is designed so patients will feel as comfortable as possible, and art is an important part of that, Kaufmann said.

The injury occurred in Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns when Finley, 26, ducked his head to absorb a hit from safety Tashaun Gipson after catching a pass over the middle. He spent time the next two days in the intensive care unit of the hospital undergoing tests, which indicated he wasn't expected to need surgery.
