Kia Nurse Commits To UConn

Court papers said prescriptions were also written in the names of Bernie Fine's wife, Laurie Fine; a second daughter, Sheila Fine, 24; and son-inlaw, Quint Streeter, 26, without proper authorization. The Fines were among seven people listed in the state case as having received prescriptions for oxycodone and hydrocodone from Havens. Court records don't show that the state charges have been resolved. Havens' lawyer, Patricia Campbell, and First Chief Assistant District Attorney Rick Trunfio did not return phone messages. The prosecutor in the federal case, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Spina, said he was unaware of the status of the state court charges. A written settlement of the federal case says that Havens prescribed 36 medications to people who were not her patients "without a medical purpose and outside the usual scope of her professional practice" between Jan. 1, 2012, and June 21, 2012. Havens was not admitting to any wrongdoing by signing the agreement, the document says. She surrendered her registration number with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in July 2012, according to the agreement.

Things like this dont happen to me its like winning the lottery. Rousseau has been playing bingo regularly for five years at a church in Vista. She said she likes the game because it involves thinking and its not just gambling. Several bingo buddies suggested she try out Pechanga. Rousseau is still figuring out how to spend the winnings, after she pays Uncle Sam. Remodeling her kitchen is on the top of her list The biggest win to-date for bingo at the casino was $22,000 won July 10 by a Murrieta man. Rousseaus windfall, though large for bingo, was a fraction of the winnings the casino paid out in October, which totaled nearly $30 million, according to Ciara Green, a spokeswoman for the casino. Winning $54,000 at bingo is raretypical windfalls in bingo are usually from several hundred to several thousand dollars, Green said. Pechanga Bingo is unique in Southern California because players can win the progressive amounts without additional buy-ins or bets, Green said. Each player automatically gets a shot at winning one of five multi-progressive bingo jackpots, which are classified by color, red, green, blue, yellow and purple. A player wins the progressive amount when he gets a bingo and also has five number boxes in a straight line appearing as the same color.

Nurse wins $54K at bingo

Merrilie Rousseau, a nurse from San Marcos, won $54,000 playing bingo at Pechanga casino in Temecula. The Lady Lions and Huskies were her final two schools, although Indiana was still in the running at the end. Nurse canceled scheduled visits to Kentucky and Tennessee. Nurse visited UConn as late as earlier this month, and from all indications, that is when she grew to really love the program. The Huskies (4-0), who play Oregon on Wednesday at the XL Center , are still waiting to hear from 6-4 center/forward A'ja Wilson of South Carolina, considered the top unsigned player in the United States. Wilson reportedly is deciding between South Carolina and UConn. The end of the fall signing period is Wednesday. Nurse, the youngest member of the Canadian national team, is the niece of former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb and his wife, Raquel, a former Syracuse basketball player. Nurse helped Canada earn a silver medal at the FIBA Americas World Championships in Xalapa, Mexico. Nurse's brother, Darnell, a 6-foot-4 defenseman, was a first-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers and is playing junior hockey for the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, where he has seven goals and 16 assists in 21 games. "Congrats to my sister on her commitment to UConn," Darnell Nurse tweeted Monday.

Nh Hospital Technician Faces Sentencing Next Week

Rs150m hospital for Khairpur

One woman said she had received a small cut and was afraid to console her toddler grandson when he fell. Another woman who was being treated for her third heart attack when she was infected said she is in danger of losing her job because she has missed work due to fatigue and nausea, and because of liver damage, cant take medication that would protect her from additional heart problems. Kwiatkowskis reckless conduct has forced vulnerable, unsuspecting and innocent people to endure immeasurable suffering and anguish, wrote his attorneys Jonathan Saxe and Bjorne Lange. Kwiatkowski recognizes that the life shattering nature of the injuries should drive the judges decision, but they said a 30-year sentence was more appropriate. Among their arguments: Kwiatkowski confessed before his first court appearance, didnt blame anyone else and decided relatively early to plead guilty, sparing the victims and the state from a potentially lengthy and costly trial. Defense lawyers also argued that the shorter sentence would balance the seriousness of the crimes against Kwiatkowskis mental and emotional problems and his addictive disease which clouded his awareness of the risk to which he was exposing his patients, as well as himself. They said Kwiatkowski began abusing alcohol as a teenager, and by last year was drinking a sizable amount of vodka daily to feel normal, injecting himself with 100 milligrams of fentanyl several times per week and taking 80 milligrams of OxyContin on days when he couldnt get fentanyl. Kwiatkowski grew up in Michigan and started his career there before becoming a traveling hospital technician who was assigned by staffing agencies to fill temporary openings around the country. According to the plea agreement, Kwiatkowski told investigators he had been stealing drugs since 2002 the year before he finished his medical training and that his actions were killing a lot of people. Before he was hired by New Hampshires Exeter Hospital in 2011, Kwiatkowski worked as a cardiac technologist in 18 hospitals in seven states, moving from job to job despite being fired at least four times over allegations of drug use and theft. Thirty-two patients were infected in New Hampshire, seven in Maryland, six in Kansas and one in Pennsylvania. Kwiatkowski also worked in Michigan, New York, Arizona and Georgia.

He said that a scheme for civil hospital in Khairpur at an estimated cost of Rs600 million was approved during past PPP government but it fell victim to official apathy and only two or three blocks of the scheme had been completed till this day. The budget for the scheme had to be raised from Rs600 to 1000 million because of rise in inflation in the intervening years, he said, adding the construction of the Mother and Child Healthcare Hospital would be completed in two years. He said that Iran is a brotherly Muslim country and a neighbour with which we share common religious and cultural values. Iran and Turkey had extended great help to Sindh during 2010 floods which had devastated almost half the province, he said. Mehdi Subhani, consul general of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said that Pakistan and Iran are important brotherly states which share common values of religion, culture and geography. He said that Irans Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had issued special directives to extend whatever help Pakistan needed during floods and other natural disasters and so the Iranian government donated $60 million to the countrys relief efforts during floods. He said that it was the third project in Sindh which the Iran government had launched jointly with the provincial government. Earlier, a number of projects were launched in Garhi Khuda Bux, Naudero and Benazirabad, he said. He said the establishment of Mother and Child Healthcare Hospital would cater to the needs of people of this region which in turn would bring immense pleasure to the Iranian government.

Manhattan hospital fully restores woman's hearing in time for holidays

Lenox Hill Hospital patients are the first and second in the U.S. to get the magnetic implant. Above, Lenox Hill audiologist Dr. Ruth Reisman holds the new gadget. "We have worked diligently to create an affiliation that meets the needs of our patients and our community. We're looking forward to making a transition that results in improved access and quality of care for residents in Alameda and our neighboring communities." The hospital's financial troubles, including the loss of $10 million in net revenue after its contract with Kaiser Permanente to perform surgeries expired in April 2010, prompted the need for the facility to join a broader network, Stebbins said in a background report for district trustees. The hospital on Clinton Avenue "would not be sustainable even in the near term without entering into an affiliation," she said. The opening of the Kate Creedon Center for Advanced Wound Care in July 2012, the acquisition of the Waters Edge Skilled Nursing Facility and the launch of the Bay Area Bone and Joint Center has not generated enough revenue to maintain the hospital, according to hospital officials. The facility can boost revenue by joining the Alameda Health System because the network needs more beds for patients and space for surgeries, which the hospital can provide. The deal worked out with the network calls for it to provide funding for facility improvement, new technology and state-mandated seismic upgrades. The Alameda Health Care District will retain ownership of the property and leases connected with the hospital under the agreement, while the network will assume responsibility for day-to-day management. The $298 parcel tax currently collected annually from Alameda property owners since 2002 to support the hospital will remain earmarked for the facility, a requirement by law. "This marks another significant milestone in Alameda Health System's vision for expanded access to quality, affordable care throughout the East Bay," said Wright Lassiter, III, the network's CEO. "Alameda Hospital will continue to support the health care needs of the community through its provision of quality care by world-class providers who are close to home." As part of the deal, Alameda Hospital employees will remain district employees for an initial transition period of at least one to two years, with no change to seniority, work location, benefit or pension plans, according to district officials. "Floating" of staff between facilities is not anticipated, and the medical staff at the hospital will be kept separate from those at the network.

S.f. Medical Examiner Lags In Ruling On Deaths

Medical Tourism: The Future of Healthcare?

Medical tourism is a growing industry, enticing millions of Americans to travel abroad in search of cheaper health care. It?s transformed into a billion dollar industry attracting both patients and healthcare providers alike. But as the industry grows in popularity, critics warn that the cheap price can come at a much greater cost. Elyce Kirchner reports. 20, 2012, Childs went into a closet in his North Beach apartment, taped up the door, mixed a set of chemicals and inhaled the fumes - "the worst day of my life," Neal said. Since then, Neal said she's been harassed by student loan collection agencies that are trying to find her son and won't accept an incomplete death certificate. Every call is painful, she said. "I get up in the morning thinking of my son. I go to bed at night thinking of my son," she said. "Every single day, I check the mail wondering if I've got the death certificate. Every time there's a big envelope in the mailbox, my heart beats faster. "I have been through so much hell with this," she said. "I want this stuff over." Ellen Huet is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.

MEDICAL TOURISM AND INSURANCE PROVIDERS Joe Harkins of the Medical Tourism Association said that this years conference was the largest to date, and with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, he anticipates that interest in the industry will only continue to grow. Obamacare is a big topic, theres uncertainty in whats next and people are turning to medical tourism, said Harkins. The bottom line is to get care if its cheaper if its quality you cant lose. Its an argument that has U.S. companies like Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and United Group Programs exploring the idea including medical tourism as a part of their coverage. Healthcare has really gone global; theres no reason that it needs to stay in your back yard, Harkins said. The low costs abroad has more and more patients comparison shopping for medical procedures: RISKS OF MEDICAL TOURISM But as with domestic healthcare, medical tourism doesnt come without risks. Its a fact that plastic surgeon Dr. Barbara Persons is all too familiar with. I see a patient about every two weeks that has some issue, Dr. Persons told NBC Bay Area. At her practice in Lafayette, Dr. Persons regularly performs corrective surgery on patients returning home from a medical tourism trip gone south.

Naperville setting zoning for medical marijuana businesses

Suburban Chicago arrest photos "I would be much more comfortable having a pharmacy sell this than 'Jim & Bob's medical marijuana shop,'" he said. For a standard pharmacy to dispense cannabis, according to state rules, each employee working behind the counter would be required to be licensed and certified for the new service. The proposed Naperville zoning adds the 'primary purpose' restriction. Commissioner Patricia Meyer asked whether cultivation centers are intended to be indoor facilities. "They're going to have to be indoors," answered Kristen Foley, senior assistant city attorney. "Based on the fact that dispensaries may only sell marijuana that is grown in the state of Illinois, the growing season will have to be longer than what it is outside." "I was concerned that we won't be seeing what looks like a farm," said Meyer. "We won't see fencing and barbed wire that looks like a prison." With the passage of the medical marijuana act, Illinois joined 19 other U.S. states and the District of Columbia that have removed criminal penalties at the state level for medical use and cultivation of cannabis. One proponent who lobbied diligently for the legislation was Dan Linn, executive director of Illinois NORML (the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). "It is good that more municipalities are discussing this matter, as it helps to eliminate the stigma that medical cannabis patients are criminals and continue to be treated that way," Linn wrote in an email. "Patients should not be forced to go to an industrial park to get their medicine.

Nurse Practitioners Push For More Freedom

Missing nurse traced to Chandigarh, accuses foster mother of harassment

Physicians groups worry that patients might be confused by nurses with a "Dr." before their name. They also worry that nurse practitioners with a doctorate will eventually push to broaden their scope of practice, eating away at what physicians do -- and at the money they make, since treating a patient at a nurse practitioner clinic is cheaper than being seen by a doctor in most cases. Groups such as the American Academy of Family Physicians point to an article in the Jan. 16 edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education, in which Mary O'Neil Mundinger, dean of Columbia University School of Nursing in New York, was quoted as saying: "If nurses can show they can pass the same test at the same level of competency, there's no rational argument for reimbursing them at a lower rate or giving them less authority in caring for patients." That's a recipe for a bifurcated system of care, some doctors say. "Saving money should not be the main factor for decisions that impact patient care and safety. Cutting costs by substituting nurses for physicians would lead the United States to two classes of care -- one run by physicians and a second by differently qualified health care professionals," wrote Reid Blackwelder, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. But in Pennsylvania, this isn't a scope-of-practice issue, at least not yet, Ms. Reiser said. It's about freeing up nurse practitioners to do what they're already trained, and permitted by law, to do.

Nurse Practitioners Challenge AMA Recommendations on Team-Based Care Reimbursement

"No games were played in the courtroom. There was no hiding behind insanity defenses." While McClain had no prior criminal record, not even a parking ticket, Ligon believes she is all the more dangerous because nobody can predict what she might be capable of doing at any instant. Yates case factor Authorities originally said McClain had suffered a miscarriage but had not told her fiance. One of her key defenses might have been similar to what another Houston mother, Andrea Yates , successfully used. Yates claimed severe post-partum depression led to the drowning of her six children in a bath tub and was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity on appeal in 2006. Yates' attorney, George Parnham , was a consultant on the McClain case. But Moncriffe, her lead defense attorney, acknowledged there was no real medical evidence that McClain had ever suffered a miscarriage. As a result, he said, making that case would have been very difficult. In addition, although several of her family members had been diagnosed with mental issues, McClain's attorneys abandoned an insanity defense because she had no history of mental illness. Moncriffe said that since the shooting his client is taking some antidepressants, but not any psychotropic drugs. The victim's family filled the jury box to witness the guilty plea.

Nurse in child abduction, slaying agrees to life in prison

The team within 24 hours traced Ranjit to Chandigarh, and recovered her. DSP Balwinder said the nurse was traced to Hope Clinic, Sector 21, Chandigarh, where she had been working since her disappearance in March. He added that Ranjit told the police that Kuldeep had adopted her around 21 years ago. The nurse told police that her foster mother used to harass her for money, following that their relations turned sour. To get rid of her foster mother, she discontinued using her mobile phone number and shifted to Chandigarh without telling anyone, the DSP said. She also stated that Harjinder did not kidnap her and it was her own decision to move to Chandigarh. The police would produce her before the court, following which appropriate action would be taken regarding the case registered against Harjinder, he added. Meanwhile, according to Kuldeep, Ranjit had worked as staff nurse at Sidhu Hospital from 2011 to March 2013. Kuldeep in her complaint to police had claimed that she used to meet her daughter at Sidhu Hospital until March this year.

Nurse answers the call from UConn

Kia Nurse signs her letter of intent for the UConn Huskies. (Photo: Robin Leworthy Wilson/Aerial Promotions) AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 20, 2013 -- AANP Calls on Organized Medicine to Put Patients First AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Kenneth P. Miller, PhD, RN, CFNP, FAAN, President of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) today responded to American Medical Association (AMA) recommendations that in team-based care models, physicians should be lead on all teams and be the sole recipients of payment for integrated services. Dr. Miller said, "The AMA continues to perpetuate care models that are based on an outmoded and ineffective hierarchy that no longer works. "While AANP supports integrated models of care and reimbursement reform, we have grave concerns about tying reimbursement exclusively to physicians-led models and limiting innovation around care delivery models that meet the needs of patients and their communities. Reimbursement and licensure models like those proposed by the AMA limit care access and patient choice, and interfere with patients' ability to continue to see preferred nurse practitioner providers. "As health care evolves, and providers and payers look to work together toward best deploying resources, providing the right care at the right time, AANP calls on the AMA and all of organized medicine to leave behind this limiting model and expend its efforts and energy to serve the interests of patients." Dr. Miller also noted that the AMA recommendations fail to acknowledge the recommendations inherent in the IOM Future of Nursing report ; and the certification standards that recognize nurse practitioners and other providers as leaders in providing health care. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is the largest professional membership organization for NPs of all specialties.

Creigh Deeds released from hospital

Creigh Deeds was released from the hospital Friday, three days after his son apparently stabbed him before fatally shooting himself. Sen. Deeds was discharged from UVA Medical Center on Friday morning, Eric Swensen, spokesman for University of Virginia Health System, said in an e-mail. I have no additional details I can provide. I am alive so must live. Some wounds won't heal. Your prayers and your friendship are important to me 2009: After loss to McDonnell, Deeds tries to regain footing In a Twitter message Friday, Deeds wrote: I am alive so must live. Some wounds wont heal. Your prayers and your friendship are important to me. He posted the same message on his Facebook page and drew hundreds of responses. Deeds, 55, the 2009 Democratic nominee for Virginia governor, had been hospitalized since Tuesday, when he was repeatedly stabbed in the face and chest during an altercation with his son, Austin Deeds, 24. Austin Deeds, also known as Gus, was later found inside the family home in rural Bath County, dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Siskin Hospital Hamilton only became director in mid-2012, after much of the delays there had already been ongoing. In an interview Thursday with CNN, Hamilton said the hospital had looked back at dozens of patients records out of concern for possible delays in care or treatment. "We reviewed a total of 80 cases, and after careful review of both internally and externally into our organization we found that seven were related to a delay in care," he said. The facility sent notifications, or "institutional disclosures," to those seven veterans or their families about the delays in care. Asked whether there might be more veterans dead or dying as a result of the delays in care at Norwood, Hamilton said: "We've had no additional fatalities at this point, and we are not aware of any additional requirements for any institutionalized disclosures based on the evidence." Hamilton said by mid-2012 the delays in the gastrointestinal section of the hospital had grown to large numbers. "We were looking back at a potential delay in GI consults of about 5,100 total," he said. On Tuesday, the VA said in a statement to CNN, "The Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to providing the best quality, safe and effective health care our Veterans have earned and deserve. We take seriously any issue that occurs at one of the more than 1,700 health care facilities across the country. The consult delay at Dorn VAMC has been resolved." The statement added that cases are now tracked daily, and additional staff members were hired. But sources at Dorn -- both patients and medical staff -- tell CNN that's just not true. The problems continue, and veterans are still facing delays that could be killing them.

Brooklyn Hospital Tells Wrong Patients They Have HIV, Lawsuit Alleges

This was apparently too much to ask of one Brooklyn hospital, whose botched lab work resulted in several patients being told that they were HIV positive when they weren't, and others that they'd tested negative for Hepatitis Cwhen they were actually positive. It's possible that none of this would have come to light if not for whistle-blowing by one lab employee, who is now suing Kings County Hospital on the basis that her superiors allegedly punished her for attempting to curb the oft-made mix-ups, DNAinfo reports. 51-year-old lab associate Lili Hutchison alleged in a lawsuit that her colleagues have made her life a living hell since 2002, when she first notified the inspector general for the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation that much of the lab staff was unfit for their jobs, on the basis that they routinely muddled life-changing lab results. We believe that, because Lili has spoken out about matters impacting the health and safety of the public, that she has been subjected to a steady stream of retaliation and harassment, her lawyer, Thomas A. Ricotta, told the news site. We intend to pursue all of her rights and remedies to the fullest extent permissible under the law, as no hospital or health care provider should take action to punish employees who seek to protect the public." Hutchison persisted, eventually having her claims of the slipshod care substantiated by the Department of Health, which issued the hospital several violations for patient safety and quality assurance standards, the lawsuit says. In return, Hutchison was denied a promotion and even suspended for two days, allegedly in retaliation for her attempts to bring the appalling situation in the lab to light. Despite all this, Hutchison is still employed by Kings County Hospital. Reached for comment, the hospital's communication's department said they were "just finding out" about the lawsuit, and declined to offer a statement. In 2008, the hospital was thrust into the national spotlight after a patient died of neglect on the facility's floor, an incident in which several hospital workers were charged with attempting to cover up. Cash-starved Lake Whitney hospital now on brink of closure

Mahmoods management team also failed to submit required financial reports last spring to the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. That failure led to a cutoff of Medicare reimbursements in recent months. The hospital relies heavily on those payments. To keep the doors open, doctors footed payroll expenses out of their own pockets while the authority obtained a court order to force Mahmoods team to submit the financial reports. Cato and other board members were counting on the Medicare money to start flowing again once the reports were filed. Then there was another complication: Those reports and a recent CMS audit showed that Medicare substantially overpaid Mahmoods team. Because CMS certifies the hospital entity itself, not the operator per se, that means the authority relinquishes future Medicare reimbursement funds until the debts incurred under Mahmood are paid off. Essentially no options are left to forestall closure. But CMS officials say they are in talks with the authority to try to put the hospital under a new certification status as soon as possible. That would take at least a month to get the authoritys application approved.

Medical Marijuana Update

Kids Mobile Medical Clinic is on the road to better children?s health

An Intergovernmental Operations Subcommittee will monitor the effectiveness of the current medical marijuana program, and a Scientific Subcommittee will review applicable scientific research. Both subcommittees will review the practices of other states. Only 59 patients are enrolled in the program in the District and only 39 doctors are currently licensed to recommend medical marijuana. Massachusetts On Tuesday, the Brookline town meeting cleared the way for a dispensary to open there . The meeting passed three warrant articles designed to set up a licensing framework for medical marijuana businesses. Dispensaries must be at least 500 feet from a school Nevada On Wednesday, the Reno city council approved a moratorium on dispensary business license applications . Las Vegas passed a similar temporary moratorium in September. Reno officials said they were waiting for the state to set final dispensary regulations before the 2013 medical marijuana law goes into effect on April 1. New Jersey On Monday, the state's third dispensary began accepting patient registrations . Garden State Dispensary (formerly known as Compassionate Care Center of America) is opening in Woodbridge, although when that will actually happen is not yet certain.

And on Monday she took her 2- and 3-year-old boys there to see the traveling group of pediatricians because the boys had a mysterious, itchy rash. Theyre always right about everything, she said of the doctors. And they help us. The Kids Mobile Medical Clinic has been riding through the streets of Washington for 20 years this fall. Run by the department of community pediatrics at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, the van has treated 5,000 District children, according to hospital figures. Thats 50,000 patient visits, said Matthew Levy, a pediatrician and medical director of the Kids Mobile Medical Clinic. Were part of the community, he said. The van targets some of the Districts most-impoverished neighborhoods and reaches children who often lack access to doctors and health services. Levy said the clinic examines all the barriers to medical care and helps residents overcome them, no matter where they live. Whether its the clinics monthly ophthalmologist visits, free glasses for the uninsured, immunization or a limited pharmacy, Levy said, residents continue to turn to what they affectionately call the van year after year. Theres something about our program thats unique and special, and our families know that thats why they come back, Levy said.

He became a doctor himself, working as a vascular surgeon in Yaounde's Central Hospital. And he started a nonprofit, ASCOVIME, that travels into rural areas on weekends to provide free medical care. Since 2008, he and his group of volunteers have helped nearly 32,000 people. Each of these weekend clinics provides a variety of medical care . Many people are treated for malaria, tuberculosis, malnutrition, diabetes, parasites and sexually transmitted diseases. Others might receive crutches, a pair of donated eyeglasses or free birth certificates -- documentation that's required for school but that many impoverished families simply can't afford. In the evenings, the team will do simple surgeries with local anesthesia. Operations are usually done in a schoolhouse, town hall or home; after the procedure, patients get up and walk to the recovery area to make way for the next person. "We are receiving 500 people in each trip," Bwelle said.

There is a clear mandate for the state to regulate this segment and indeed bringing the benefits of the plant to the larger medical community is a valid long term strategy. The state feels a need to craft a regulatory environment to allow for the roll-out of the I-502 program, making a recreational component of this plant available by taking away the entirety of the existing Medical Cannabis Program. One does NOT have to mean extinguishing the other. The people voted for it in 1998 The state can certainly produce a regulatory system to support a flourishing recreational model, while also crafting a similar regulatory scheme allowing for smart rational parameters that continue to allow for Washington Citizen/Patients who voted for the right to have Whole Plant Botanical Cannabis to continue on a redrawn blueprint for promoting wellness for our own states Citizen/Patients. The citizens of this state have rights and now, one of them is to Whole Plant Botanical Cannabis and we urge our elected officials to recognize that we the Citizen/Patients have spoken clearly about this issue. The many benefits those that grow are able to achieve should not be totally taken away. The collective garden model is a necessary adjunct for those sick and injured who are not able to garden for themselves. Now, with the states input at this crucial time, a new set of operating protocols can be established allowing for a more specified system that patients can use to guide them in pursuit of a self-directed healthcare regime. What advances such a model is a regulatory system that affirms the Washington citizens rights to behavior consistent with the law of the state.

Pa. medical marijuana bill has bi-partisan support

Sens. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, and Mike Folmer, R-Lebanon, said their bill would help ensure Pennsylvanians can get medical benefits from cannabidiol, or CBD, a compound found in marijuana that is credited with various medical applications without providing a high. It is the first time that a medical marijuana bill has been drafted with bipartisan support in the Senate, Leach said. Under the bill, Pennsylvania doctors would be limited to prescribing medicine derived from marijuana that has a higher amount of CBD than marijuana's psychoactive chemical, known as THC, Leach said. It would not be addictive or psychoactive, and could be used in place of pharmaceuticals that are toxic, addictive or riddled with side effects, Leach said. "There is no rational reason not to support giving a child this medication," Leach told a Capitol news conference packed with supporters of legalizing medical marijuana. It can be delivered by dropper for children and pill form for adults. Two Pennsylvania mothers of children with epilepsy, including one boy who has a rare and sometimes deadly form called Dravet syndrome, appeared with Leach and said they believe it can control their children's debilitating seizures. "My plea today to the government is to leave the doctoring to the doctors," said Dana Ulrich of Reinholds. She said her daughter Lorelei, 6, suffers some 400 seizures a day.

In the present scenario, the compensation amount awarded by the Supreme Court is huge and unbearable. If it becomes a practice, it would be difficult for the doctors to continue their service. Hence, we decided to take part in the review petition on behalf of the medical practitioners across the country," Saini said. The SC verdict in the medical negligence case dominated the workshop arranged by the Kolhapur medical association (KMA), one of the oldest medical practitioners' organizations in the state, where senior vice president of IMA Maharashtra Vivek Bilampelly expressed strong concerns over the court decision. "Compensation of over Rs 5 crore is unbearable and it will make difficult for the medical practitioners to concentrate on the treatment of the patient," Bilampelly, who practices in Pune, said. President of IMA, Maharashtra branch, Anil Pachnekar told TOI that his branch has discussed the compensation issue and had conveyed its views to IMA. "If we don't discriminate between the patients, the same rule should be applied in the compensation. The compensation verdict may affect the doctors spread in the entire country," he told TOI over phone. Jayant Watve, president of KMA, said that doctors in all parts of the region are worried since the verdict.

In the pivotal clinical trial, when TissuGlu was used, patients required fewer post-operative treatments and resumed normal activities, such as going to work, showering and using the stairs, more quickly. "Submitting the final module to FDA is a critical milestone in making TissuGlu Surgical Adhesive available to surgeons and patients in the U.S.," said Patrick Daly, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cohera Medical. "The successful completion of this module represents a huge effort on the part of the entire company and we look forward to continuing our work with FDA." Currently, most patients who undergo abdominoplasty procedures or other large flap procedures, such as mastectomy or inguinal lymph node dissection, require the insertion of drains to remove fluid that accumulates under the skin at the surgical site. Drains are often uncomfortable for the patient and can lead to additional complications. TissuGlu forms a strong bond between tissue layers, helping to reduce the fluid that can accumulate during healing. About Cohera Medical Cohera Medical, Inc. is a leading innovator and developer of absorbable surgical adhesives and sealants. TissuGlu's chemical composition is resorbable, non-toxic, forms a strong bond between tissue layers and allows for natural healing, which ultimately may enable faster recovery. TissuGlu has received CE Marking approval to be sold in the European Union (EU). Cohera Medical is also developing a unique and proprietary bowel sealant, and a strong adhesive for mesh fixation. Outside of the EU, TissuGlu and the other Cohera products are currently indicated for investigational use only and have not yet been approved for medical use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S.

Long-Awaited Kidney Transplant Canceled Over Hospital Strike

An innovative experiment now aims to use that hour or more window of time to boost lung transplants by allowing donations from people who suddenly collapse and die at home instead of in a hospital. There arent enough lungs. Were burying them, said Dr. Thomas Egan of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who is leading the project. It turns out your lungs dont die when you do. This is a new frontier for transplants. Today, registered organ donors dont get to fulfill that last wish if they die outside of a hospital. The U.S. doesnt have a system to recover their organs quickly enough. It can be an added shock to grieving families, and a waste of potentially good organs that might ease transplant shortages.

Theres got to be a way to get around this. For the latest organ transplant news, visit our topic page. The University of California San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest said it had to cancel the transplant because of an impending union strike. The one-day strike is the result of a disagreement over reckless and unsafe staffing, according to a statement the health care workers unionAFSCME gave to ABC affiliate KGTV in San Diego. Rivera, a father of three who has spent the past year on dialysis, said its difficult for him to find a match because his blood type is O-negative. His sister is the only match in his family, but she already donated a kidney to him 12 years ago. (Most people need more than one kidney transplant over their lifetimes.) Once that kidney failed, he needed to look beyond his family for a match. After launching a Facebook campaign to find one, Rivera found a donor who lived in Tennessee. Because the donor lived out of state, his insurance wouldnt cover her travel and lodging expenses during the surgery. So Rivera used gofundme.com and raised $5,000 in two days. The hospital initially told Rivera it couldnt schedule another surgery until 2014, but he learned today that the hospital rescheduled the surgery for the day after the strike, on Nov. 21.

She was born at the government-run Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center, suffering from a condition called newborn asphyxia, a failure to start regular breathing within a minute of birth. The consequences are possible brain damage or death if not corrected quickly. According to the World Health Organization, newborn asphyxia is one of the leading causes of newborn deaths in developing countries, accounting for about 20 percent of the infant mortality rate. In the United States, it is the 10th leading cause of infant mortality. Althea could have been saved had the hospital's ventilators had been working. But power lines were down in the entire region. There was no electricity and none of the equipment in the hospital flooded and wrecked worked. Not the ventilators, not the incubators, not the suction pumps to feed her oxygen.

listener_new_rect Mercys policy prevents physicians from fulfilling their ethical obligations to patients and interferes with patients rights to make informed decisions regarding their medical care, the complaint said. The policy also violates patient safeguards under Medicare and Medicaid as well as a Colorado law protecting physicians autonomy, the ACLU said. Mark Silverstein, ACLU of Colorados legal director, said that by barring doctors from informing patients about all possible treatment options, Mercy Regional poses a potential threat to the health, safety and even the lives of its patients. The potential risk to patients is especially grave in communities like Durango, where a Catholic hospital is the only one for miles around, added Sheila Reynertson of MergerWatch , a New Yorkbased nonprofit that tracks Catholic hospital consolidations and their impact. She noted that so-called sole provider hospitals there are 30 of them in mostly isolated parts of the country receive additional federal funds to serve the needs of their communities, as well as Medicare, Medicaid and other tax breaks. Reynertson said that gag policies like Mercys are absolutely common and are becoming more so as Catholic health-care systems gobble up other providers in a merger boom touched off by health-care reform. Whats unusual about this case is that you have it in writing, Reynertson said. Usually, the policies are not so clear cut. But vague gag rules may be just as problematic, Reynertson added, especially at secular hospitals that find themselves under Catholic control. People tend to overreact to keep their jobs. This is what weve heard many times the nurse in the emergency room who is suddenly very nervous about that pregnancy emergency because theres a heart beat.

China's Hospital Ship Stays Home While Typhoon Death Toll Rises In Philippines

I was just devastated that a week to transplant, they tell me theyre going to cancel, Rivera, 37, of San Diego, told ABCNews.com. I was infuriated. I was calling and emailing anybody I could.

Three organizations were honored this year. The others are Baylor Regional Medical Center in Plano, Texas and Pewaukee School District in Pewaukee, Wis. Established by Congress in 1987, the Baldrige Award is not given for specific products and services. Applicants are evaluated on: strategic planning; customer focus; measurement and analysis; workforce focus; operational focus and results. Organizations compete in one of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, health care, education and nonprofit (including government agencies). The application process is extensive. The Baldrige journey provided the framework for Sutter Davis Hospital leaders to focus and continually improve the delivery of patient care, Sutter Davis CEO Janet Wagner said in a news release. This is now a crucial thread in the fabric of our culture. A total of 102 awards have been presented since the program was authorized, including 18 hospitals. The new policy, put into effect last month, removes most dietary supplements from the hospitals list of approved medicines, NPR reports . Mainly, this is because theyre not medicines at least not in the eyes of the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates them as foods. As such, according to the hospital , they cannot guarantee their safety and effectiveness. A recent study used DNA testing to discover that many herbal supplements are fake and some even contain toxic substances. Commonly used supplements included in the ban include melatonin, echinacea, chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, CoEnzyme Q10, milk thistle, and probiotics. According to a member of the hospitals Therapeutic Standards Committee, administering these medications particularly to children with serious health complications is unethical when the risks are unknown, and when there are alternative treatments that have been proven in clinical trials to be safe and effective. CHOPs strong stance against supplements is led by Dr. Paul Offit, the hospitalschief of infectious diseases and a leading opponent of alternative medicines .I cant believe anyone would put a megavitamin in their mouth, Offit told U.S. News in July. He told NPR that the hospital is finally trying to do something that the FDA should have done long ago bydeveloping a list of approved exceptions that must be verified by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention and further confirmed by the hospital. The Natural Products Association, in a letter to the hospital, called the ban unfortunate and Offits crusade against the dietary supplement industry misleading. Philadelphia Children's Hospital Bars Herbs And Supplements

In what it describes as a break from other hospitals, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, or CHOP, last month removed most dietary supplements from its list of approved medicines, and established new policies for administering them. Dr. Paul Offit , chief of infectious diseases at CHOP, tells The Salt the move comes after a "growing level of frustration" over the years. Offit, who chairs the board which approved the new policy, says supplements often aren't what they claim to be. The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, treats them as food, not pharmaceuticals. "The problem has been that we can't even get from most companies that certificate of analysis, that shows the product was independently tested and what's on the label is in the bottle," Offit says, pointing to a recent problems like in Hawaii, where a fat-burning supplement was linked to liver failure. Under CHOP's old policy, dietary supplements were treated as home medications. If a family brought them in, an attending doctor or nurse was obliged to evaluate them as best they could and administer them along with hospital-sanctioned meds during the patient's admission. If the supplements ran out, the provider would order more through the hospital pharmacy. Now, families are entirely responsible they have to obtain and administer the unapproved supplements themselves, notify a doctor when that happens, and sign a waiver form .

Solta Medical explores sale after loss exceeds estimate

Market Leader in Competitive Environment CSMC maintains a leading market share in its primary service area, despite facing strong competition from several highly regarded and reputable academic centers and healthcare systems in the greater Los Angeles area. CSMC has been able to capture a good share of the highly profitable tertiary and quaternary specialty and sub-specialty medical services and has the largest heart transplant program in the world. CSMC also has a highly aligned physician-hospital platform facilitated through its foundation, which is affiliated with over 800 physicians who practice in CSMC's service area. Manageable Capital Plans and Moderating Debt Burden The AHSP's budget was $613 million and the project came in $121 million under budget, which is a significant amount of savings. This can be attributed to CSMC's in-house project management team that oversaw the integrated planning and construction. There were very few change orders and the utilization of building information modeling technology avoided potential system clashes. This building provides CSMC with the flexibility to add additional capacity depending on volume growth trends. CSMC's total debt as of June 30, 2013 was $1.1 billion and is 100% fixed rate. CSMC's debt burden has historically been high for its rating level, however, maximum annual debt service (MADS) as a percentage of revenue has declined to 3.4% in fiscal 2013 from 4.7% in fiscal 2009 compared to the 'A' category median of 3.1%. Debt service coverage has also improved to 5.3x in fiscal 2013 compared to 3x in fiscal 2012 and 3.7x in fiscal 2011.

Medical marijuana advocates in Colorado give pot to pets

(File/UPI /Jim Bryant | License Photo Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Some medical marijuana enthusiasts in Colorado are taking the "holistic approach" by giving their pets pot to deal with pain. As animals age, its harder for them to do things like fetch, run and play, prompting some owners to prescribe marijuana to help fix the problem . "Arthritis is the really big thing for our pets as they get older, for being able to move about and get their exercise, pet owner Barbara Novey told local Fox affiliate KXRM. "So medication of any type that will help someone that is natural will help their pet as well, and I think that maybe our pets can help us purge this reefer madness mentality and realize that it's not the dangerous drug that you think it is." Novey thinks pot is therapeutic for her pooch, but NorthWest Animal Hospital veterinarian Dr. John Sudduth asserts that giving a dog medical marijuana can be deadly. "There just hasn't been enough research that has been presented to the medical community that would inform us to how to safely use medication such as marijuana. You're really playing with fire. You don't really know what you're giving and what kind of side effects it could have. It could result in serious illness and it could result in death in some cases." "Pets are not necessarily people in fur coats," Sudduth added. "And how they metabolize medications and utilize medications those are all separate issues that have to be determined." It is still illegal for veterinarians to prescribe medical marijuana pills.

Hansen Medical's Magellan(TM) Robotic System to Be Presented at 40th Annual VEITHsymposium(TM) of Vascular Surgeons and Interventionalists

Roth Capital Markets analyst Chris Lewis said Solta's financial performance for the past few quarters would negatively affect its potential takeout valuation, but a company looking to enter the aesthetic devices space could be lured toward Solta's diverse product portfolio. Lewis named Canada's Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (VRX.TO) as a prospective buyer, saying that "it has been rumored that Valeant wants to get involved on the device side." Valeant has aggressively pursued acquisitions in the last few years, and most recently sealed a deal to buy cosmetics products maker Obagi Medical Products Inc in April for about $344 million. The company continues to look for small, cash-based acquisitions, its chief executive officer told Reuters last month. Voce Capital was also behind pushing Obagi toward a buyout. The San Francisco-based investment firm, which said in May that it owned about 500,000 Solta shares, has repeatedly criticized Solta's quarterly results and also pointed toward growing consolidation in the aesthetic medical market, warning that Solta's "exit options" might be narrowing. Cynosure Inc (CYNO.O), a maker of minimally invasive aesthetic treatments, agreed to buy Palomar Medical Technologies Inc in March to expand its portfolio of light-based devices used to treat scars and wrinkles. The market for aesthetic devices fluctuated around 2008-2009 as patients put off discretionary spending amid an economic slump. However, demand has steadily grown and cosmetic surgical procedures increased more than 3 percent in the past year, with almost 1.7 million procedures in 2012, according to research by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Solta also unveiled on Monday a restructuring plan to cut annual costs by $12 million. The company's cash balance stood at $7.7 million at the end of September, compared with $16.3 million at the end of June.

Who Rates Typhoon's Medical Challenges "monumental"

A German medical team prepares to board a military helicopter in the devastated city of Tacloban, Philippines, on Nov. 11. coli, Cranmer says. "The Philippines has done quite a good job in handling cholera, so I don't anticipate that to be a problem." Later in the recovery period, there's a risk of other infections, such as measles (especially if vaccination campaigns are disrupted), tetanus, rabies, meningitis and even polio. Polio has been eliminated in the Philippines, "but we thought it was eliminated in Syria too," Cranmer tells Shots. And of course, everyday medical needs and problems will need attention dialysis patients, heart attack victims, women giving birth. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates there are 95,270 pregnant women in the typhoon zone; and Brennan says 15 percent of those births can be expected to involve complications. 'Absolute Bedlam' In The Philippines After Typhoon Haiyan But the Philippines has some advantages compared to Indonesia and Haiti. The sprawling archipelago has a better medical and public health infrastructure, Brennan says. A hint of that is readily apparent in the web postings of the Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council situation reports that Cranmer calls "unbelievable" in their detail. "The Philippines is not the lowest of the low," Cranmer says.

Jupiter Medical Center Engages MedAssets for Cost Management and Operational Performance Approach

Relief may happen quickly for some or can occur slowly over time every patients experience is unique. Some patients, like Tarja Toikkanen, who came to my practice after years of traditional medical treatments failed to address her migraines, seek pain relief but end up finding emotional relief as well. I was taking prescription medicines, but a one month supply would only last me a couple weeks, Toikkanen, a 48-year-old nurse in South Florida, said. A friend of mine suggested acupuncture and recommended Dr. Perdue. I was willing to try anything just to feel better. The acupuncture treatments proved effective for treating Toikkanens migraines, but during her sessions, it was obvious that there was more going on than just migraine pain. While treating me for migraines, Dr. Perdue observed the difficult time I was going through in my personal life and she recommended Medical Qigong, Toikkanen said. She was right, I had been seeing a therapist and was on depression medication. For Toikkanen, her initial pain was addressed within a few months, but the wounds of her emotional battle were more difficult to unlock. However, she was determined to feel better.

But this cash cow for the Israeli health care system may be in jeopardy. Israel's Health Minister Yael German is set to decide whether Israel's hospitals should be forced to curtail a business that has become an increasing part of their profits. German is the latest health official to be put on the spot to do something about a system critics say has hospitals devoting more rooms to foreigners when Israelis have to wait months for beds to open up. Previous efforts to reform the system have gone nowhere. Though the public hospitals refuse to say just how much of their wards are turned over to foreigners, they say cutting out medical tourism will slash revenues that are used to improve treatments for all. Calin Shapira, deputy director at the Ziv Medical Center in the north of Israel, said he felt his hospital had the balance about right but needed to boost foreign numbers, not cut them.

In Response to 'The Biggest Medical Discovery of Our Lifetimes'

To succeed in this field youll need to be confident, decisive and comfortable working with people, says Debra Krukowski, coordinator of the diagnostic medical sonography program at Triton College in River Grove. We deal with patients a very short period of time, but we are very intimate with them, so we have to quickly make them feel very comfortable with us. That's going to come from your presence and how comfortable you can make people feel. Sonographers work independently when performing their work, but are part of a health care team, working closely with doctors. Most sonographers work in hospitals, with some working at private physicians offices, outpatient facilities and labs. Education and training The most common path toward working as a sonographer is an associates degree from an accredited program, with most employers wanting certification after completion of your training. The coursework includes general math and science classes, sonography courses and hands-on practical training in a health care facility. In addition to Triton, Harper College in Palatine and the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn offer associates degree programs in sonography. If youve already got training and certification in another health care field, you might be able to take a one-year certificate program. Specialties Sonographers often specialize in one or more areas of the profession, with specialties including abdominal, musculoskeletal, breast, neurosonography, obstetric/gynecology and echocardiography.

Medical Qigong: An alternative therapy for pain

"We hope today's developments provide some solace to Paul DeWolf's family and friends, who remain in our thoughts," university President Mary Sue Coleman said in a statement. The health system, where DeWolf was a student, said it hopes the arrest bring closure. "The loss of Paul DeWolf was a terrible shock and tragedy for our entire medical school community, and we are heartened by this development and thankful for the diligent work of the U-M police and the Ann Arbor Police Department," a statement said. A co-worker discovered DeWolf after checking on him at 11:30 a.m. July 24, when he failed to show up for work at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. He lived in the Phi Rho Sigma house, where a couple of dozen men and women who are attending medical school live. The house has shared space and a front and back door, along with individual rooms that have locks on the doors. A day before DeWolf was discovered dead, a burglary was reported next door around 8:30 p.m., according to an online crime report and police. Police believe DeWolf was killed the night of July 23 or early on July 24. Paul DeWolf ran marathons, played volleyball, scuba dived and played several musical instruments, including the piano, French horn and, more recently, acoustic guitar.

Solta Medical to evaluate strategic alternatives

"We have carefully reviewed the implications of the reductions we have made and are confident that we will be able to maintain our robust product pipeline and continue to bring to market innovative aesthetic products," said Interim Chief Executive Mark Sieczkarek. Solta Medical has also reached an agreement with a secured debt lender for a $40 million financing, which the company said would provide it with the working capital necessary to execute its operating plan to regain growth in the market. The company, which makes devices for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation, acne reduction, and other uses, has posted revenue below analyst expectations in recent periods. However, Solta Medical said Monday it is in the process of implementing changes to the sales structure and marketing approach in North America and said it is beginning to see signs that the strategy is generating results in the fourth quarter. "Despite the disappointing financial results in Q3, we have made recent progress in stabilizing and reinvigorating the North American sales force and expect to enter 2014 with growing momentum," Mr. Sieczkarek said. The company on Monday reported it swung to a third-quarter profit as results were helped by an $8.7 million credit for the fair value reassessment of expected earn out payments associated with the acquisitions of Liposonix and Sound Surgical Technologies. Excluding special items, the company posted an adjusted loss. Revenue, meanwhile, was hurt by lower average selling prices on systems, primarily on the Liposonix products, and a higher proportion of international distributor business. Overall, Solta Medical posted a profit of $644,000, or a penny a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $2.9 million, or four cents a share.

Need grows for diagnostic medical sonographers

Health careers That set of possibilities is further refined by an understanding of epidemiologic data and research-based evidence -- two arms that continue to advance with the adoption of electronic medical records. It is a holistic process founded in an old principle of problem solving -- Occam's razor. Medicine isn't the only field to apply the theory of Sir William of Ockham. Law, mathematics, psychology and almost every scientific field employs this idea that the fewest assumptions lead to the most probable solution -- and in medicine we explain it as "the fewest causes accounting for all symptoms." Dr. Hyman's grand statement that functional medicine's future is "looking at patterns and connecting everything together" is predated. Sir, with all respect due to you, physicians have been doing this for centuries. Every day, most likely at 7 a.m. or noon, there are probably well over 100,000 residents, medical students, fellows, and attending physicians across the country participating in their round table-like discussions with differential diagnosis at the center of it all. These conferences exercise our ability and skill to arrive at well-reasoned diagnoses, as well as to consider appropriate alternative diagnoses.
